Fall Fun

We played "Trees and Squirrels" again in the gym, now that we all know how to play we had a lot of fun getting a chance to chase each other
Our exploration table was filled with soapy water and jewels. We practiced pouring and had fun collecting the jewels.

We created "Our Family" picture to put in our portfolio

Having the doll house has been lots of fun
Special Project on Friday: Ghost Soup
I gave the students 36 rolls of toilet paper and told them we had 2 rules:
1. You can do anything you want with the toilet paper as long as you don't bother anyone else
2. You can do anything you want with the toilet paper as long as you don't break anything
We wrapped it around chairs
Covered the floor
Wrapped each other into mummies
The room was coved in white fluffy paper
It was fun to slide on
and wrap around ourselves

and cover up in
We worked as a whole group and didn't have any problems  following our 2 rules.
It was a lot of fun.
When we were done we made: Ghost Soup
Ingredients:
toilet paper
water
shaved Ivory soap
Mix it together for an ooey goey clean mess

We also started our next project this week on instruments. We watched a few clips of an orchestra and the students sat down with me to tell me what they know about instruments (I still have a few that I need to add but here is what we have so far) You can zoom in and out and drag it back and forth to find your child's web.

Important Dates:

The Magic House is coming... November 7th and 8th for our first in school field trip.  This will be a great experience for all of our students, I can't wait to see what they are going to do for us.

Muffins for Moms: November 9th join your children for breakfast before school anytime between 7 AM and 7:45. Then stay for chapel if you would like. We will be going to chapel with the K-8th graders

Thanksgiving Food Drive Every year Zion Student Council sponsors a Thanksgiving food drive for the Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. The seminarians are young men studying to be pastors in our church. Many of them don't get the chance to go home for Thanksgiving so this is a great way for us to show our appreciation.  You can bring in Thanksgiving type non-perishables starting November 7 through November 15th. Our chapel offerings for the month will allow the Student Council to buy Turkeys to complete the meal boxes they create.

 This week
This week was another unusual week. We had some exciting special visitors.
Mrs. Woike came in and read some fun spider books to us and then helped us make spider webs on Monday and Tuesday. (Laura Woike is a member of our church and has children that graduated from Zion)

At Chapel on Tuesday the Youth Encounter team, Watermark did a puppet show and played music for us.  The team travels all over ministering, they had team members from all over the country even Mexico and Germany!
We were very excited to sing with them and her their message to us.
In gym we played a game called "Trees and Squirrels," we chased each other like squirrels and hid in trees.

We are a little short on pictures this week. We were still very busy.
Working with Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) The 4 and 5 year olds used the Roll-a-Dough to roll the letter "L" It takes lots of hand muscle control to roll balls into snakes to make the letters.

The 3's did another HWT activity to work on crossing the mid-line when writing. We traced railroad tracks to make big horizontal lines and small vertical lines.

We had chapel on Tuesday with Mrs. Bernhardt. We are learning how to sit quietly and keep our attention on the leader.

We had fun making a tent outside and seeing our shadows through it.

We also did some sewing on styrofoam plates and made a mobile to remind us of our Bible story about Abraham.

Don't forget: We only have school on Monday and Tuesday this week. The teachers are attending the Missouri District Professional Church Workers Conference.

Parent Teacher Conferences: You have or will receive your letter about parent teacher conferences on October 20th/21st. I have a total of 26 conferences to do, I will try to make accommodations for everyone but my schedule its a bit tight. What you need to know

Chapel this week is on Tuesday.

New book orders went home.  Please place your order online with Scholastic.  Our class code is GPGJT.

Sicknesses have started in the Sonshine Center. We have had several children out sick in all of the classrooms. Please remember that the school has a 24 hr fever/throw-up free policy before a child can return to school. This insures that we don't spread our sicknesses to the other students in our classroom.

Scrub Club We are going to start learning about washing our hands properly so that we can keep ourselves healthy. We will all be joining the "Scrub Club" to learn all the steps to wash our hands well.

Mrs. Helmkamp will be gone on Friday. Mrs. Schmidt will be filling in as the teacher and we will have a sub as the teacher aide.

Family Fun Movie Night- Don't forget Friday night is Family Movie night. We will be showing 2 different Veggie Tale movies in the church basement starting at 6:30. We will provide popcorn and water. You may bring your own "peanut free" snacks.

No School- October 12-14. Teachers will be attending the Missouri District Professional Church Workers conference at the Lake of the Ozarks. I am very excited to be presenting on "iPods/iPads in Early Childhood" as well as doing a group presentation, "Web 2.0 Smackdown"
More marble painting this week. Working on body control

Working together to do marble painting adds another difficulty. Find our new artwork pieces on the wall in our classroom.

The girls really enjoyed some new balls. They cheered for different students as they bounced on the balls.

After decorating rainbows that were already drawn some students made their own

ABCya.com is a great website to practice our alphabet

We all demonstrated our cutting as we cut out a square.

We went to the gym twice this week the first day we played catch with some funny shapes and animals.

Since we have learned about Noah we acted it out as well. We had fun pretending to be Noah's family and all of the animals.

On Wednesday in the gym we pretended to be different kinds of animals escaping from the gym. Here you can see us stretching tall to be giraffes.

Since it was so nice outside on Thursday we took some paints outside to enjoy the weather.

Watch us singing one of our prayers before lunch. "The Superman Prayer"
